Many of those infected may not be aware of their status because the initial symptoms of an HIV infection can be very mild.Yet left untreated HIV can lead to serious health problems including life threatening illnesses.

Signs and Symptoms of HIV

The common symptoms of the flu-like illness that occurs a few weeks after HIV infection are:

  • fever (raised temperature)
  • sore throat
  • body rash
  • body rash

Other less common symptoms may include:

  • tiredness
  • joint pain
  • muscle pain
  • swollen glands (nodes)

How do you get HIV?

  • Penetrative sexual intercourse (via the vagina or anus).
  • Unprotected oral sex.
  • Sharing injection needles.
  • Occasionally from mother to child during childbirth.

Long-Term Effects of HIV

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is blood borne virus that causes the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The condition results in progressive failure of the human immune system, and allows life-threatening infections and cancers to thrive.

Without diagnoses and treatment, the average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be around 10 years.
